Asheville Roots Music Review

The term "American roots music" may not be a familiar one, and requires some explanation. In general, folk music was viewed as a window into the cultural life of these groups. Folk songs communicated the hopes, sorrows and convictions of ordinary people's everyday lives. It was sung in churches, on front porches, in the fields and other workplaces, while rocking children to sleep, and at parties. The melodies and words were passed down from parent to child, through songs - and their meanings - often changed to reflect changing times.

I like acoustic music. And I love some pedal steel and a tasteful snare. I can dig some electric guitar played clean with great tone. I'm talking about Roots music. Guitars, fiddles, banjos, mandolins, basses, steel, dobro... give me some gritty vocals with some smart lyrics. Hold the cheese. Evoke a time, an image, a feeling. "Roots" is a big umbrella, turn it upside down and fill it up. Asheville's got roots, country, Americana, folk and bluegrass to spare. The point of this blog is to highlight the uncompromising talent found here. I'll be posting show and CD reviews, You Tube links, random thoughts and tips about the music business, performance and booking stories, and general ramblings about all things Roots.
