Asheville... the most musical little mountain town out there!

You can find a bluegrass jam, a folk singer, an Americana star, or a street busker any night of the week in this town. They say you can shake acoustic musicians from the trees.... the music scene here is tough to break into, the standards are high the judgement is fierce, and there's almost always someone better willing to play it for free.... Asheville.

Jenny Juice's Brown Bag Songwriting @ MoDaddy's final rounds...

Tonight is the last round to decide the last finalist to compete on Dec. 4th! There are not many things rootsy-er than original songwriters... vocals and a guitar.  I had the privilege of sitting on the judges panel last week and was amazed and the wide range of talent. The bar was pretty crowded and the contestant list was full before 8 o'clock, with a wait. Tonight's round will solidify the 10th and last finalist and next Friday will be the be final round, crowning the winner and bestowing the $500 prize.

This info came from Dreamspider's Blog:    (more here)

“The Brown Bag an open mic songwriting competition that offers a way to network the Asheville music scene by inviting seasoned musicians and music business people to listen and judge the raw, fresh, talent in town that shows up regularly.”~ Jen Greer
Bi-annually (fall and spring) Jenny “Juice” Greer of Jen and the Juice hosts a 10 week open mic with a twist at Modaddy’s. Musicians put $3 into a brown lunch bag to perform. Celebrity judges select a winner, and the one performer they select takes home the bag of cash.
Win $500! At the end of the Monday night series there is a final shoot out of the weekly winners. This is the BIG Brown Bag which contains $500 and many other prizes. The BIG Brown Bag Finals are Saturday DEC. 4 at Modaddy’s.

Weekly Music Must-Sees!

THURSDAY:  The Belleville Outfit @ The Grey Eagle!
Love, love, love this band. Swingy, jazzy, rootsy, danceable fun. You will not be disappointed. I've had the pleasure of seeing this band at festivals around the country several times over the past year and am continually amazed by their high-energy show.

“… their instrumental virtuosity … and sophisticated songwriting touch moves their music beyond fun revivalism. ... They're capable of moving in most any direction they wish.” - Nashville Scene
8:30 at the Grey Eagle $12
Applesauce opens the show
FRIDAY:                                               Local Brewery Shows!!!

Friday is easy... first head down to my favorite local brewery, The French Broad, order a Rye Hopper, and listen to Woody Wood. You never know if he's going to play solo, duo, full band, but my favorite is his solo acoustic set at the FBB... incredible songwriting, amazing singing and playing... perfect way to spend happy hour.

After that, you can cruise on over to Craggie Brewery, and catch Nikki Talley. I hear she's promoting a new CD, Beautiful Charmer

Two great local acts, at two great local breweries... I heart Asheville.
